Maybe someday, along with cruise wear, there will be a special fashion category: space wear. It could be sooner than later, given that SpaceX, the space exploration company started by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, recently announced plans to fly two tourists around the moon in 2018.
Shoes for space travel have already gotten off on the right foot with designer Clement Fernandes’ Y-3 x SpaceX concept sneakers for wearing on Mars.
The sneakers consist of an upper made of nylon embedded with carbon nanotubes. When activated by body heat, the nanotubes cause the nylon fibers to contract and conform to the shape of the wearer’s foot.
The outer sole is made of a multi-density EVA structure that creates softer cleats and greater cushioning. To make walking easier in the unique conditions on Mars, the cleats are specifically positioned with a gap under the arch for a light touch. The shoes are finished with rubber elements on the back that strengthen the structure of the upper and provide protection in sandstorms and temperatures as low as minus 52 degrees C.
