ASTM Intl. is looking for people with experience inspecting fire-resistive materials to help create a proposed new standard: WK54567 Practice for the On-Site Inspection of Installed Fire Resistive Materials. Spray-applied (SFRM) and intumescent (heat expanding) materials are used on structural steel and other components in schools, hospitals, homes, offices, petrochemical plants and other places where fireproofed steel supports a structure’s load. “It is important that steel and other key structural elements are directly protected and properly inspected to ensure safety,” says Phil Mancuso, technical services manager for Isolatek International, an ASTM member. In addition to building officials and fire marshals tasked with inspecting fire-resistant materials, the proposed standard will be used by architects, specifiers, building owners and others involved in making buildings safe from fire.
