Light, bright and protected

Precision Custom Canvas Inc.’s client wanted to create a fresh, new space to enjoy on the aft deck of a custom cruiser they were rehabbing. A bimini top and full enclosure would provide privacy and protection from the elements, but the client also wanted to keep things bright and airy, and be able to open the sides—and not have to deal with panels that have to be rolled up and down or removed and stored.

To meet these requirements, Precision Custom Canvas, St. Catharines, Ont., Canada, proposed a solution using composite fabrics manufactured by Serge Ferrari North America, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The design included a lace-on top built with Stamoid Open, and retractable curtains made from Soltis 92. To create an enclosure that would not be too heavy, Precision worked with a stainless steel fabricator to create a structure with minimal steel posts, to which they could lace on the top.

The retractable curtains were achieved by suspending PVC keder track rail under the stainless steel frame using a grommet and lace band, which contributed to the look the customer wanted and kept the track level, to facilitate opening and closing the curtains. When closed, the curtains allow people inside to see shapes and shadows outside, while people outside cannot see in. They also protect from the rain, yet because of their porosity, the curtains allow for air flow, so the closed-off area doesn’t become stagnant. A white color scheme keeps things light and bright and matches the furniture chosen for the space.
