New York-based Teijin Holdings USA Inc. (THUS), the Teijin Group’s holding company in the United States, provided reusable eco-bags made entirely with Teijin’s recyclable polyester to the Japan Day Festival, which took place in New York City’s Central Park on Sunday, May 22. The 600 eco-bags were packaged with T-shirts sold at the festival to raise disaster-relief funds.
The eco-bags sported the “GAMBARE! JAPAN” logo, the theme of this year’s event to support Japan in the aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Gambare, sometimes translated as “try hard” or “keep trying,” is a Japanese expression used to inspire and uplift people’s spirits. Made with Teijin’s ECO CIRCLE fibers, the bags used chemically recycled fiber produced from used polyester products. At the end of their useful lives, the bags can be recycled by Teijin using the ECO CIRCLE closed-loop recycling system.
THUS has been providing eco-bags to Japan Day since 2008. Launched in 2007, Japan Day builds bridges of cultural understanding between the people of Japan and the United States. More than 40,000 people attended the festival in 2010 to enjoy Japanese cultural performances and attractions.
