Teijin Limited announced that it has joined the United Nations Global Compact as part of the company’s commitment to socially responsible sustainability.
The U.N. Global Compact is a set of principles for self-conduct that participating organizations worldwide follow in their independent efforts to achieve sustainable growth. Participants are required to support and implement 10 basic principles covering human rights, labor, the environment and anti-corruption. According to Shigeo Ohyagi, president and CEO of Teijin Limited, “Through our support for the U.N. Global Compact, we now intend to further meet or exceed the high expectations of the general public and our stakeholders regarding the corporate social responsibilities of the Teijin Group.”
Principles of the U.N. Global Compact
Human Rights
- Businesses should support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights; and
- make sure that they are not complicit in human rights abuses.
Labor
- Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
- the elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labor;
- the effective abolition of child labor; and
- the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.
Environment
- Businesses should support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges;
- undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
- encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
Anti-Corruption
- Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
In September 2010, the company declared its support for the Women’s Empowerment Principles of the U.N. Development Fund for Women. Based in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, Teijin is a global technology-driven group operating in eight main fields: aramid fibers, carbon fibers, polyester fibers, plastics, films, medical and pharmaceuticals, fiber products marketing and IT businesses.
