The U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade (JCCT) completed its 21st session in mid-December, announcing significant progress in several areas, including enforcement of intellectual property rights. China has launched a Special Campaign against counterfeiting American products and pirating designs, an issue that has plagued U.S.-China trade relations. Other progress included agreements on technology standards, clean energy, government procurement and “indigenous innovation” – discrimination in government purchasing based on the origin of the product design or industrial equipment. Inventors of innovative products (such as technical textiles) designed in the U.S. will face less discrimination and be able to expand market access in China.
