The consumer group Choice, a founding member of Consumers International, audited seven Australian childcare centers, none of which complied fully with regulations governing UV protection in shading structures. The group recommended regulation of sun shades in preschools to ensure that shade cloth provides sufficient protection and structures are designed to account for sun intensity and direction. Craig Sinclair, Cancer Council of Australia, wants a more comprehensive approach to reducing UV exposure. “There needs to be a commitment that schools provide adequate shade,” says Sinclair, “but more importantly there need to be appropriate sun smart policies and practices in place,” such as sunscreen and protective clothing.
