Environmental certification for U.S. foam makers

The Polyurethane Foam Association (PFA) recently introduced a “Platform on Sustainability” outlining seven “green” principles and voluntary performance, environmental, health and safety standards for qualified foams used in upholstered furniture, bedding and automotive seating. “The problem is there are currently no standards in the U.S. for foam cushioning in the area of environmental safety,” says Robert Luedeka, PFA executive director. The new initiative, based on Europe’s CertiPUR program, is called CertiPUR-US, which will also provide physical performance standards that will help quantify durability, consistency and comfort.

PFA plans to develop program procedures and participation requirements in early 2008. Its seven principles include: waste reduction and recycling; education on scientific research involving renewable feedstocks; energy-saving technologies; improved product safety; sustainability through improved product performance; and continuous dialogue with company leaders on sustainability issues.
