Chronology
After months of isolation, Isherwood “Ish” Williams discovers that most of the world has come down with a mysterious illness. Yet despite his instinct to remain isolated, Ish leads a new civilization.
The novel was written in the late 1940s, following the end of World War II

The version I have on my shelf is copyrighted 1947, but Wikipedia says 1949
The impression of the story is that 80 years ago someone wrote about a global pandemic and its potential effects on humans. Ish represents the reader, someone who didn’t have to watch people die, watch the news, feel hopelessness and defeat.
It is very much related to Ozymandias’ poem
