The modern office environment is changing dramatically as the way people work evolves. Four walls and a door are quickly becoming a thing of the past. The ability to adjust space to accommodate a business’ different needs is becoming essential.
To meet changing design requirements, Benjamin Hubert of the London-based design agency, Layer, created Scale, a flexible, modular acoustic partition system for Woven Image, an Australian textile design and interior finishes company.
The sculptural space divider is designed to adapt quickly to the needs of just about any commercial interior as it evolves over time. In an office environment, Scale can be used to create flexible work and break-out areas as teams are created and disbanded. In a public space, it can be used to define a meeting or social event.
Developed through a rigorous design process involving 15 prototyping stages, Scale consists of pressed recycled hemp tiles that clip onto an injection-molded recyclable ABS framework mounted on recycled aluminum base plates. The 13-inch by 13-inch tiles are available in a variety of colors and have a large surface area for effective audio absorption, making the system ideal for any interior space requiring high-performance acoustic separation.
Scale can be assembled to create straight walls and gently curved corners that are solid or fenestrated. Intuitive mechanical fixings make assembly and disassembly easy—no installation expertise or special tools are required. The framework clips together using a polymer bolt system, and the tiles clip to the framework magnetically.
