Cambodia, Vietnam stand out in export growth

Textile and clothing exports from member countries of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) declined sharply in 2012, according to a report by Textiles Intelligence. Countries recording losses included the Philippines (clothing exports down 12.4 percent); Malaysia (textile and clothing exports down 12.4 percent); Thailand (textiles and clothing exports down 12.2 percent); and Indonesia (textile and clothing exports down 6.3 percent). Vietnamese exports were unaffected by the general downturn in Southeast Asia, posting growth in sales in the EU, U.S., Japan, China, Russia and South Korea. Cambodian textiles and clothing exports to the EU grew by 32.4 percent, while sales dropped 2.0 percent in the U.S. Indonesia chalked up losses in exports to the U.S. and EU, but made up ground because of surging domestic demand for clothing and textiles.
